Rock Creek Lake and its waterfalls are near Fort Scott in Bourbon County, Kansas. The 75-acre Rock Creek Lake is an integral part of the city and rural water reserve system. Located on the Marmaton River and surrounded by deep woods, Rock Creek Lake serves as a habitat for wildlife and a quiet haven for fishermen, canoeists, and campers.

At the top of the lake is a set of beautiful waterfalls that are spectacular in the spring when the water is flowing. The falls are comprised of the spillway to Rock Creek Lake and several minor falls cascading over drops of three to eight feet as they flow down to the lake. During much of the year, visitors can cross the stream on rocks at the bottom of the waterfall. ‘

The water flows only about 300 feet before emptying into the Marmaton River.

To reach Rock Creek Lake Waterfall, drive west out of Fort Scott, Kansas, on 19th Street. The street name will change to Kansas Road, and after an unpaved stretch, it will turn south, becoming 195th Street, which runs along the east side of Rock Creek Lake. The drive off 195th Street leads to a gravel road with many potholes, so a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. Pull into the park at the north end of Rock Creek Lake and follow the narrow gravel road across the dam to the turnaround next to the falls.

Although there is some water flow year-round, the falls are much more impressive during high water in the spring.

There is a beautiful, primitive campground at Rock Creek Lake that offers a variety of amenities, including picnic tables, fire pits, grills, and vault toilets, which are available throughout the camping area. There are a few spots with access for kayaks, canoes, or water toys, and they also offer shade. The camp spots are large and well removed from one another. Reservations are accepted at Rock Creek Lake. Fishing Licenses are required for individuals over 16. Boats require a permit. Fishing enthusiasts can catch Black Bullhead, Bluegill, Channel Catfish, and Largemouth Bass in the lake.

The best time of year to visit Rock Creek Lake is during the spring or fall. The mild temperatures and beautiful scenery make these seasons perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, and birdwatching. There is abundant wildlife in this area, including deer and wild turkey.

The lake and the waterfalls are just a few miles west of the Frontier Military Byway.
