| Caruso | None | Caruso, an unincorporated community in Logan Township, was home to the county’s first building to be built from steel and concrete. It originally held 65,000 bushels and opened for business on October 1, 1923. Caruso is now home to Scoular Oil Seed Processing. It is 6.7 miles southwest of Goodland, Kansas, at 6425 Co Rd 14, Goodland, KS 67735.

| Esdon | 1888-202? | Edson, Kansas, is a tiny town and census-designated place in Washington Township of Sherman County. It is also an extinct town as it no longer has a post office. As of the 2020 census, the population was 17. |

 Eustis, Kansas building in the 1880s. Eustis, Kansas, is a long-abandoned town in Sherman County. This place got its start when P.S. Eustis and O.R. Phillips organized the Lincoln Land Company, which laid out the town in the spring of 1885. It was the first county seat. The Eustis post office closed on July 20, 1888. |

| Gandy | 1885-1887 | Gandy, the first town in Sherman County, was founded in June 1885. It was named for Dr. J.L. Gandy of Humboldt, Nebraska. He was a land dealer, but his methods of acquiring land were questionable, and he was not very popular as he started buying land in Sherman County. The Gandy Post Office was established on September 4, 1885. The Tecumseh, the first newspaper in Sherman County, began publication on November 11, 1885. The first school in Sherman County was also in Gandy. However, by early 1886, the town was beginning to decline. The newspaper was moved to Itasca in March, and in the fall, the postmaster received permission to relocate the Gandy to a new site in the new town of Sherman Center. The post office continued to be called Gandy and was the only post office Sherman Center ever had. It closed on January 26, 1887, and was moved to Goodland. |

Grace, a small hamlet of Sherman County, was located in the Beaver Creek Valley, about 18 miles northeast of Goodland, the county seat. After its post office closed, its residents received mail by rural delivery from Edson, the nearest railroad station. |

 Itaska, Kansas, business building. This town, which was laid out and platted in December 1885, was first named Leonard after Thomas P. Leonard, one of the platters and a member of the Sherman County Land Association. However, establishing a post office proved difficult because the town’s name was similar to those of other towns in the state. The town’s name was changed to Itaska, and the post office was established on July 22, 1886. That year, Itasca made an unsuccessful bid for the county seat. When the railroad came into the county late in 1886, the tracks were several miles from the town. Most of the businesses moved to Sherman Center and Eustis that fall. |

 Store and cream station in Rhine, KS. Rhine was a country hamlet in Grant township, 11 miles northwest of Goodland, the county seat, and received its mail when the post office closed. The population in 1910 was 15. |

 Old School in Ruleton, Kansas. Ruleton, Kansas, is an unincorporated community in Lincoln Township of Sherman County. It is also an “extinct” town as it hasn’t had a post office in decades. Today, the community is filled with silos, grain elevators, storage facilities, and a few homes. |
| Sherman Center-Shermanville | 1883-1893 |
 Shermanville, KS. school. Sherman Center, originally called Shermanville, near the geographic center of Sherman County, gained a post office on February 15, 1883. On September 20, 1886, the town was officially established by Governor John A. Martin’s proclamation, which also named Eustis the temporary county seat. Shortly after Goodland was founded several miles to the south, the town of Sherman Center ceased to exist. The post office closed on September 30, 1893. |

Voltaire was founded by a group from Atwood in Rawlins County on June 15, 1885. When the town of Eustis was named the temporary county seat, it was the beginning of the end for Voltaire. The Great Blizzard of 1886 swept through the area, killing many of the early settlers in Sherman County. Shortly afterward, the town of Voltaire began to decline. In 1889, the town’s post office was closed, and the Kansas Legislature vacated the town. |
